Amazon is Down
June 6, 2008
When I worked as the Technology Director for Cuker Design I would have to explain downtime as it occurred. The biggest pain-in-the-ass response was “Amazon is never down. Why can’t you do that?” I would usually have to bite my cheek, though I wanted to say (oh so many times!) “If you paid us as much as Amazon pays in infrastructure, we could do five nines.”
To those people I would like to show you this:

That’s right; Amazon is down, and it’s been down for quite some time. This isn’t a veiled attack on Amazon or its services. This is simply proof that everyone has periods of downtime. Get over it.
