First R3M Photos

May 22, 2007

Just over a week and a half ago I received the Voigtländer Bessa R3M from PhotoVillage.com. When I pulled it from the box I was surprised by the heft of the camera, despite its small size. The included 50mm f/2 Heliar lens is small, not protruding too much, but still heavy enough to tip the camera forward.

I’ve finally developed my first roll. I used Fuji’s Pro 160S which is touted to have a tight grain and low, natural saturation. This was the first roll of 160S that I’ve shot and I’m quite pleased with the results. This film is more for portrait photos than everyday/travel photography, giving more natural skin tones.

The photos I got back are superbly sharp, the Heliar living up to its name. Contrast is quite heavy yet it maintains the film’s excellent dynamic range. And that’s just the way I like it.

The R3M is a fantastic performer in its own right. It’s quite durable, comfortable to grip and the meter is perfect. This camera setup rocks my socks.
