H. Pylori

February 15, 2008

On Tuesday I went to meet my new doctor and describe my symptoms, the ones everybody has: fatigue, stomach pain, the urge to strangle idiotic pop stars. I hadn’t been to a doctor in nearly ten years so I could have had anything. After a brief Q & A with Doctor Ko, he explained that I might have Anemia, a fairly easily fixable diagnosis. But he wanted blood and pee to be sure.

After two days wait I received a call from the lab tech, indicating that I have something called H. Pylori, or Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium mostly commonly affecting the stomach and duodenum (not that anyone has any idea what a duodenum is anyway).

The prognosis: two antibiotics and an antacid, the latter to reduce the H. Pylori-inspired ulcers in my tummy.

Of course, Julia, in her obsessive manner (she puts the O in OCD, which, by the way, she has), looked up H. Pylori on Wikipedia and found that the most likely of circumstances are that it was contracted by way of ingestion of fecal matter, most commonly through tainted food.

Which means, of course, that at some point in my life I literally ate shit.

H. Pylori can go undiagnosed for years, causing nothing more than irritation. There is some speculation that it increases the risk of cancer. Despite the (highly improbable) potential outcome, I am not worried. The prescribed regimen of medicine is proven 90% effective.

I just can’t get over how I must have gotten it.

Vegetables who have not been carefully washed are a likely candidate. S--t is a great fertilizer, after all... :)

Wow, that's kind of gross. Here's to your speedy recovery!

Tons of vegetables are harvested in a field with only a outhouse (no running water!) for facilities. E coli and all sorts of other nasties abound. A fairly common source could have been salad. Possibly "pre-washed ready to eat!" salad mixes from your local grocery...

Poo, it's not just for breakfast anymore. Or something.

i just been diagnosed with this too and your thoughts are exactly what i was thinking....i ate shiat!! OMG

I know how you feel. I was just diagnosed with it but I just blamed it on my husband because we all know I would never eat anything like that. You can get it from the big wet smooch too. I am allergic to penicillin so it is a bit harder to cure.

What a candid review of h.pylori!! I, too, have been diagnosed and they are going to give me a double regimen of antibiotics with Nexium (double on this, too) to prevent me from getting sick from the antibiotics. I am very tired. Is this part of the symptoms?

I think that if you have that many antibiotics you're bound to feel tired. I did, however it only lasted a few days, compared to the two weeks I was on them.

I was experiencing severe nausea and saw my doctor. Without a moment's thought and no exam, he ventured an intuitive diagnosis: symtons of an antidepressant withdrawl which could not be treated. I continued to complain for three months, all the time not being able to eat regular meals (I existed on a modified BRAT diet) and losing weight. He never waivered in his diagnosis and each visit I weighed in at a weght loss from the previous visit. All told I lost 15 pounds and suffered extremely from the nausea. Only after I told him its time to "fish or cut bait" did he finally conduct an exam. The initial diagnosis: Helicobater Pylori. I wonder what the effects of this prolonged period before diagnosis will have on the cure.

I suspect that macho pride kept him from admitting that he made a wrong diagnosis. You can bet that I will change physcians to get away from this "he man" stud.

My daughter of 13 has been diagnosed with H Pylori and as usual was given the "triple treatment". I have been reading about natural cures using Matula Honey that have been proven to eradicate this bug with no nasty side effects of the antibiotics. Doctors are way to prone to use antibiotics without considering natural cures.

I too have been given the treatment for H pylori. I don't how i got it, but the medication that the doctor gave me makes me tired. I have to take 8 pills a day for 14 days. I have been trying to figure out what i can eat, any suggestions?

90% of infeceted individuals were kissed by the H pylory infected patient, or parents feed their children from the spoon that they used, being infected. Dr Marshal disscution page in helico.com still closed , if anybody knows why?

It is normal after treatment to have other gastric symptoms for awhile. This is nost likely because in addition to erradication of hp, normal flora has been killed. Take probiotics heavy for a few weeks and to a lesser extent for months, and you will be far better than before. Been there. Done that. Take vitamin c too.
As far as how you got that - that is still not proven. However, since it is more prevalent in third world countries reasoning suggests that eating contaminated whatever is a likely explanation.

A while back I read that some reasearch suggests that the reasons that some who carry the bug have symptoms but most do not - is the strain. I haven't heard much about this since, but it makes a lot of sense.

Keep in mind that there is not much money spent researching this and knowledge is going to be in short supply. The pharms (who control the majority of research now) are simply not interested in curing anything. This is why THEY fought the infection theory of ulcers for so long. This is why I had to go to three doctors to find one that was interested in doing anything other than suppressing symptons

I want to add something else. Media reports on HP have made it sound like the connection between hp and stomach cancer is rather loose. In fact it has been found that nearly everyone who gets stomach cancer has hp. It also has been found (by accident) that in some cases treating HP in stomach cancer victims actually made the cancer disappear! Until more is known on why hp is a problem in some and not others, it makes sense to erradicate and not settle for anything less.

I am on day 4 of my triple treatment. I was very tired until yesterday. My dr also gave me some tylenol 3 for pain which did give me more energy...just from being pain free. I ate scrambled eggs with butter which went down easily and without much argument from my tummy. From there, I did a logic leap that the proteins must be easier to digest so moved on to a chicken breast. That too went through fine. Last night, for the first time in two weeks (was VERY sick for weeks before) I ate a loaded baked potato! Why? Because I was hungry! I couldn't believe it! I haven't been hungry in weeks! And I feel great this morning! Nothing like carbs to give you some energy! Just take it slowly, guys. Eat protein and more protein, and I think you too will become hungry again!

I was treated for hp back in August 2009, the 14 teen day treatmeant and have been on Nexium 40 mg daily ever since due to acid reflux, was it caused by the hp, not sure, but I didn't have it before, so after one month I am now on 2 pills daily. I have trouble with the feeling of something in my throat, not as bad as it was when I was taking one pill a day,and oh, my tummy, it's so out of wack it isn't funny. I don't know what to eat one day from the next.

I have just been diagnosed with H-pylori and am on the antibiotics and Nexium 40 mg. I have been sick for 2 weeks previously - very bad pain in the stomach, nausea and the worst heartburn EVER. I hope this works !! What can I eat - previously I was on a high fibre diet - but the dr says no - so I eat bland foods and am very tired!

I just finished the typical two month triple treatment for H pylori. Symptoms were much improved. Within two days I've started feeling lousy again -- nauseated, no appetite. some burning. I don't have GERD-like symptoms -- the discomfort is in the mid to upper abdomen. My question: how long does it take, post therapy for HPI, to begin feeling better? Is it normal for symptoms to persist for awhile?

My doctor is sending me for an Endoscopy as she says this is the most accurate way of diagnosing a stomach ulcer or H-pylori. However one of you guys had is diagnosed by blood and pee sample? I asked my doctor for test using these options (which I read you can do) and she reckons that endoscopy more accurate. However I had one of those years ago and really don't want have another one if possible? Any suggestions? Thanks.

i was diagnosed with h.p. as well. only because i kept having reflux. what is this pain some are saying they having? where is it at? after being on the 3 antibiotics, i'm only eperiencing a faint weekness in the stomach. i also did the water thing after the antibiotics where you dilute the acid in the stomach because the disease lives off of the acid in your stomac. the only way to know for sure if it's gone, i guess, is to be retested. does anyone else has that faint week feeling? I'm sure it will clear up also

i was diagnosed with H pylori over 3 years ago and have had the triple treatment 3 times to no success, I am now been sent to get an endoscopy. My first test was a blood test the second and third test were breathe test as h pylori will stay in your blood for over a year so to test by blood again would always be positive even if you didnt have it. I now have anaemia and am tired all the time i have constant bother with acid reflux and have put on quite a bit of weight. If i eat the pain and reflux goes away for a short time, if my stomachs empty the heartburn reflux and pain is at its worst. The last treatment i had for it the triple dose of antibiotic plus 40mg nexium knocked ill the first week of the treatment was fine by the second week i felt ill all my nails were splitting and stomach pains worse than ever. I've got my fingers crossed that i will get a cure for this at some point.

PEPPERS SO FAR I DONT DARE TO TRY. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR ABOUT A YEAR AND A HALF. GETTING BETTER THOUGH (I THINK) SO GOOD LUCK YOU ALL.
