Odds and Ends

July 26, 2008

I’ve been busy.

Erlang

This language has fascinated me to no end though I’ve only been paying attention to it for a few days. Upon learning the basics of the syntax, I finally began to understand it, but not why someone might choose it over something like Python. Then I learned about its concurrency/statelessness—Holy hell this is awesome!

I just picked up Programming Erlang from the library so expect much more Erlang on this blog.

More on Erlang

Reia

In the Erlang vein I learned of a new language called Reia, which attempts to be a “Python/Ruby-like scripting language for the Erlang virtual machine”. At first glance it may sound pointless, but consider that you’re writing Python/Ruby-like code with the concurrency capabilities of Erlang.

So far Reia is barely an infant. It doesn’t even have a version number yet, but the features that do exist are promising. Keep an eye out for news on Reia, as I have a feeling this will be a Very Big Thing™.

Django movie

From Takashi Miike comes a film about the web development community who is kicking ass and taking names: Sukiyaki Western Django. Starring Adrian Holovaty as the Red, Jacob Kaplan-Moss as the White, and Quentin Tarantino as Michael Trier.

Twitter

I’m giving Twitter another chance. Find and follow me.

Moving!

Expect me in Portland, Oregon some time in the middle of September. If you’re there, hit me up and we’ll get some cupcakes.
