The Oscars? Really?

February 25, 2007

Seriously, who cares about the Academy Awards? It’s a gigantic party filled with pompous, rich people vying for a gold-colored statuette, reminiscent of a Stalinist personality cult, that gives them a material reason to claim superiority over fellow human beings. Why is it necessary to take an already pontifical industry and have what should be creativity and passion turned into competition?

The annual event presents a fascinating, yet scary, look into the common Western psyche. We spend more time covering the pre- and post-awards events than we do on such atrocities as the Andijan massacre, let alone the event and results themselves.

Why don’t we know last year’s Nobel Laureates? Doesn’t it seem that these people are achieving things actually worth awarding?

Amen Brother! And don't forget Darfur, Haiti, and the current rioting in South America, that makes our Imperialistic Country look lazy. :)

I'd just like to say that I know of at least one Nobel Laureate, Muhammad Yunus, creator of Grameen Bank. (Thank you, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart!) Don't forget about people like him. They may be uncommon, but they're out there.

Oh yeah, and I couldn't name a single Oscar winner if my life depended on it. =)
