"We" took Congress

November 9, 2006

The other day, my sister called me up to say, “We just took the House.” She could barely contain her glee. Later she called with “The Senate is ours now, too!” With the Democrats taking control of Congress and several state and local offices, it seems we’re breaking free from the neo-conservative stranglehold gripping this nation.

But “we”?

Not once have I conceded that I am a Democrat. I am certainly no Republican. I am too far to the left for that. But Democrat?

I am happy with the events, granted, but I think we’re traversing into the dangerous territory of apathy. Just because the Dems took control does not mean anything will get done.

It’s up to us to force them to live up to their promises. We cannot forgive negligence or irresponsibility. If we have an Abramoff, throw the bum out and move on.

The Republicans have failed. But that certainly doesn’t mean the Democrats won’t fail either. We have to always be aware, always mindful of what our politicians are doing and saying for us.

After all, our country’s actions are performed on our behalf.
