The World is on Fire

October 22, 2007

San Diego and Los Angeles are battling wildfires on multiple fronts. The fires are being exacerbated by Santa Ana winds which spread the fires more quickly across the dry and brittle region which has seen little rainfall in previous months.

An estimated 250,000 people are being forced to evacuate the surrounding areas. The fires are only anticipated to get worse until mid-week when the winds are expected to die down. Most evacuation routes point directly to the coast.

The area I live in, North County San Diego, is not expected to be affected by the fires, though the presence of the fires is omnipresent; the sky is orange or yellow, a fine layer of ash coats cars and buildings, even inside our bathroom that had its window open overnight, and our throats are irritated by the airborne harbingers of the fires.

We're fortunate, we live about a mile south of the voluntary evacuation zones. We went to Qualcomm to help out and it was literally getting flooded with donations. It was great to see SD in action.

good thing i live on the moon, where there's no oxygen to promote wildfires.
everyone should live in an environment such as this; and with the way the world's going, well might we all soon.
